There is absolutely no question that the female population is faced with extraordinary challenges. The struggle for equality continues to feel like swimming upstream in a world dominated by male supremacy,
rape culture, and harmful body image ideals. When Enactus Ontario Tech was identifying needs within our campus and community, we realized there is a need for opportunities to inspire, encourage, and empower
young women. Thus, She Leads was born. She Leads is a women empowerment organization which utilizes entrepreneurial skills to create a positive impact in the lives of young females in our community. We were
seeing the success and impact of She Leads right in front of our eyes, and although we were breaking ground and impacting many young women, we still looked to the bigger picture. We never stopped looking
for potential opportunities to expand and grow our empowerment reach. How did we do this? By utilizing none other than a woman’s best weapon and greatest accessory: the scrunchie! A scrunchie is a tool for
girls to put their hair up and get down to work. A scrunchie is not only a possible source of revenue to sustain our initiative, but a symbol of our mission. This symbol can foster a movement - a movement
of empowered women and their allies. To begin, we spent a month selling scrunchies, promoting our new event series, and recruiting new visionaries to further enhance our project's effectiveness. In that
short time, we completely sold out of our stock twice! This was evidence to us that scrunchies hold the power to solve our problems and allow us to expand our impact. This gave us direction for the future
of our enterprise, such as making use of repurposed materials and partnerships with organizations that work to combat a number of social injustices women face. We are also exploring the possibility of
outsourcing our manufacturing to vulnerable women in order to provide them with a stable, fair income. Since then, we have been able to establish a passionate team to further develop our operations.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 threw a wrench in our plans, as it did for many businesses. However, we are pleased to announce that our online store will be live shortly! We can’t wait to continue to grow this
movement, spread our vision, and empower women and their allies across Canada. She Leads. She Succeeds. She Empowers.
